Wintergreen women writers collective

The Wintergreen Women Writers Collective is a 501(c)3 organization that gathers Black women writers in a creative community committed to publishing, preserving, and celebrating their work.We collaborated with the Collective's leadership to develop a comprehensive brand identity that authentically represents their mission of nurturing Black women writers while honoring the rich cultural traditions that inspire their work.

THE CHALLENGE

The Wintergreen Women Writers Collective has been active for many years, building a strong community of Black women writers. However, they lacked a digital presence and cohesive brand identity to move them into the present and seize opportunities for the future. They needed a visual system that could honor tradition while feeling fresh and contemporary—one that communicates the warmth of their community while maintaining the credibility to attract members, partners, and funding in today's digital landscape.

OUR APPROACH

We developed a creative direction centered on "Quilted Stories"—a visual love letter to the art of weaving narratives through quilting, a craft deeply woven into Black cultural history. Drawing inspiration from Nikki Giovanni's beloved poem "Quilts," we created a contemporary visual system that honors how individual voices stitch together to form collective wisdom passed through generations.

The visual language pulses with dynamic patchwork layouts, textile-inspired textures, and vibrant color blocks—each element a testament to how individual voices create collective legacy. We breathed new life into the existing brand colors, infusing them with vibrancy and warmth while keeping the sophistication intact. The logo got a thoughtful refresh with updated colors while preserving the original font treatment and core elements. We gratefully acknowledge and credit the original designer, whose foundational work we've built upon, though their name is unknown to us.

Typography channels magazine editorial energy—warm and inviting, yet contemporary and refined. We prioritized free fonts to keep the brand accessible.

Custom graphic elements inspired by quilts and textiles create a cohesive visual thread across all touchpoints. Patchwork grid layouts with playful color blocks and varying sizes bring dynamism to content, while thoughtfully placed portrait and group imagery celebrates the collective's vibrant community. Black and white photography appears sparingly—reserved for moments of reverence, when honoring literary legacy and historical depth.

The brand refresh repositioned Wintergreen Women Writers Collective as a living, breathing celebration of Black women's literary voices. The quilted stories concept resonates authentically with their community-focused values, while the refined visual identity makes it clear: this is more than a writing group. This is where cultural legacy is preserved and Black women's creative expression flourishes. Armed with a digital-ready brand identity, the Collective is now positioned to expand their reach and deepen their impact for generations to come.
